Croydon wedding

two photos of bride and bride and groom with autumn leaves in the background

Stephanie & James Croydon wedding last autumn is another wedding that has taken me a long time to blog.

As it is clear from the images and the beautiful foliage, this wedding took place last autumn and I am blogging it now in June!

The ceremony took place in St. Gertrude’s catholic church in South Croydon and I have to say that the priest there was the best and more relaxed priest I have ever met as a photographer. He was quite into photography himself, so we had a chat about the lenses I was using on the day and whatnot. He was also very relaxed about me taking pictures during the ceremony, which is quite unusual.Of course I was still very respectful about the ceremony and tried to be as discreet as I could and I found a hiding space from which to take photos most of the time.

Wedding group photos

wedding group photo at the Renaissance Hotel Kings Cross

I think it was about time to write a blog post about wedding group photos, also known as “formals”.

I don’t tend to put these photos on my website, not even often on my blog, and I don’t even show them much in private viewings with clients either. I show my formal wedding group photos too little I think. I guess that I think everyone knows how these pictures looks like, or that they can get a bit boring and samey sometimes…I don’t know, I don’t think that many people have been ever wowed by a wedding group photo, or at least it is something that doesn’t happen often.

These probably won’t be the photos that will put a smile on your face remembering the moment (as opposed to candid photos) but I absolutely agree that some need to be taken. Wedding group photos are the ones that tend to end up in the mantelpieces the most, so they are a must for nearly all of my clients. But I will tell you a secret… I don’t know a photographer yet that loves to takes these pictures.

Being completely honest, it is not my favorite part of the day. I believe that part of the problem is that is the moment when I have to became the “bossy” photographer I am not. Organising big groups of people and get to take these photos in the shortest amount of time is not an easy task.

My priority is to take these photos quickly so the guests and bride and groom can go and enjoy a little bit of the drinks reception too, instead of being posing for endless photos for most of the time.

To get this, I advise my clients to keep the list short (8-10 group photos is a reasonable number and I would say my average) and luckily I normally get the help from the best man or the bridesmaids, who can help to gather people.

So…these are some of my wedding group photos, which have been hidden for quite a while, it was about time to show some of them!

Not all the group photos have to be the same or boring, I actually tend to take some a bit fun or different if I see the group is in the mood.

Porters Civic House wedding

Clare and Tony got married in Southend-on- Sea, a place I have been in the past photographing another wedding. In this occasion, the civil ceremony also took place in Porters Civic House.

Porters Civic House and Mayor Parlour is a beautiful grade I listed building in Southend-on- Sea, perfect for a civil ceremony, with a beautiful back garden to have some drinks to celebrate after the ceremony and take some photos.

After leaving Porters, and being in Southend-on- sea, we went to take some photos with the sea in the background, of course! I do love the sea and photographing couples around it every time I get a chance, so romantic!

Clare and Tony’s was a very intimate wedding with not too many guests, so they celebrated the reception in their own house (after a few drinks and photos in Porters). I do love these kind of weddings, and I find myself photographing more and more weddings like this, with a small number of guests and receptions celebrated in private houses. I definitely think that these weddings’ atmosphere is more relaxed and if I were a bride, I would definitely go for this option. I’ll need to get myself a big house with a big garden first!  :)

Dance photography

Today I am posting some pictures from my personal work (and non wedding related), which lately I don’t have the time to do as much as I would like.

These photos were taken at The Camera Club, one of the oldest photographic clubs in the world, to which I am a proud member. The Club runs regular workshops, one of them being the “Dance Group”. Once a month, a dancer comes to the studio and several photographers members of the Club will be taking photos there together.

In this occasion the dancer was Gaia Cicolani, an italian dancer, graduated with First Honour degree in the Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.

She performed for us while we took turns to take photos of her capturing her beautiful movement.

Central London engagement shoot

This lovely engagement shoot happened a couple of months ago in central London. I cannot believe it has taken me this long to post some photos!

Jeannie and Tak are from Malasya, but live here, and I was lucky to be the photographer they chose for their engagement shoot in London. For them it was not only important to capture them and their feelings for each other, but they wanted something with a very british and London taste to it. They were also wearing the same outfits they will be wearing on their wedding day, which I love.

The day started early in the morning in the Royal Albert Hall and we had a black cab all the time with us to take us from one place to the other. These are all the places we visit: The Royal Albert Hall, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Aldmiral Arch, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Millenium Bridge and St. Paul’s and Tower Bridge.

They were three great and intense hours and as usual, the time flew by.

This is a selection of photos of the day.

Bridal Shoot on black and white film

After a week waiting for my black and white images from the lab, I finally got them and I can share some of them here.

These are from a session I had with Angela.  If you have visited my blog recently, I posted some of the color images taken with an AE-1 Canon film camera and a roll of Fuji Pro 400 last week. If you haven’t seen those images, you can do by clicking here.

The black and white images on this post were taken with a Praktica camera using a Kodak T-Max 400 roll.

Fuji Pro 400 Film Bridal Shoot

Last Sunday was an exciting day for me. I organized a bridal shoot with Angela in a London park. Angela is already married but she fancied some beautiful photos on her dress in London.

We had a great time together and she was a pleasure to work with, but the main reason I was so excited, was because that day I was shooting film and not digital. These photos here were taken with a AE-1 Canon film camera with a roll of Fuji Pro 400.

I love how film looks, even if that sometimes means to have a less “clean” image or not so sharp. There is something charming about film.

Northcote House wedding

Kate and Phil tied the knot  nearly two months ago in one of many beautiful days of this glorious summer and I would like to share with you some of the images of the day.

The day started at St. Augustine’s church in Hammersmith, followed by the reception at Northcote House in Sunningdale Park, near Ascot.

Northcote House was a great venue for such a summery wedding, the grounds are gorgeous, with lots of space for the kids to have fun, including a huge chess board. Apart from the kids, we (Kate, Phil and me) also had some fun on the chess board and went there for some fun photos.
